Patient Associations as a Social Support: Factors Influencing Participation in Inflammatory Rheumatism and Chronic Kidney Failure

Carla Ribeiro

This paper investigates the role of patient associations as a form of social support for individuals suffering from inflammatory rheumatism and chronic kidney failure. Utilizing a qualitative biographical approach, the study conducts a comparative analysis of the two conditions, focusing on how they affect patients’ willingness to participate in support groups. The findings reveal that factors such as the level of disease awareness, perceived benefits of participation, and accessibility to support groups significantly influence patient involvement. The study highlights the critical role that patient associations play in the lives of those with chronic illnesses, providing insights into how these groups can be better structured to meet the needs of their members.
