Evaluate Consumer Beliefs for Traditional and Localized Foodstuff Under Economic Stress

George Vlontzos, Marrie Noel Duquenne, Spyros Niavis

The aim of this paper is to examine the changes in food consumption patterns of households following an economic crisis and recession. This research identifies both objective and subjective factors influencing consumers' decisions to purchase traditional and localized foods. Additionally, the paper assesses environmental and social criteria for food selection, such as locality of production and healthy nutrition habits. The spatial basis of the research reveals different consumption trends in urban, semi-urban, and rural areas. The findings offer implications for marketing and public policy makers to bolster the consumption of traditional and locally produced foodstuffs. Strategies include promoting nutritional characteristics, supporting local economies, encouraging healthy eating habits among children, and enhancing the enjoyment of cooking.
