Vernacular Architecture: Case Study of Cacarelhos Village

Manuel Diogo, Maria Diogo, Patricia Diogo, Joana Diogo

The parish of Caçarelhos, located in Northern Portugal, lies at the intersection of the Vimioso and Miranda do Douro districts. This study explores the unique vernacular architecture of Caçarelhos, emphasizing its historical significance and the influence of cultural traditions and administrative changes over time. The village's identity is heavily influenced by its past ties to the Miranda do Douro bishopric, which shaped both its cultural and architectural evolution. The research draws on comparisons with studies by Abade Baçal and other local scholars, highlighting the architectural lineage tracing back to the 1320 census commissioned by King Dinis. This paper examines the challenges faced by the community, including ecclesiastical and foreign influences, and discusses the implications for sustainable rural development.
