Dr. Nasrullah Khan, Dr. Niaz Muhammad, Dr. Akber Ali

This study investigates the management systems of public and private universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The research focuses on various factors such as direction availability, task distribution, leadership accessibility, time management, workload distribution, staff development, evaluation systems, and transparency. The study also examines political intervention, use of consultants, nepotism, human resource management, academic decision-making, and committee roles in policy formation and execution. A sample of six universities, comprising three public and three private institutions, was selected for analysis. Findings indicate that private universities face challenges in staff recruitment, evaluation systems, and compensation packages, while public universities struggle with merit-based staff induction, political pressure, and lack of collegiality. Recommendations include creating comprehensive guidelines for staff and students, establishing checks and balances, and conducting regular training workshops in collaboration with government and NGOs. The study highlights the need for improved management practices to enhance the effectiveness of higher education institutions in the region.
