Utilization of Local Journals by Academic Staff in Nigerian Universities: A Critical Review

The utilization of local journals by academic staff in Nigerian universities remains an essential academic obligation, serving purposes in teaching, learning, research, and self-development. This study aims to assess the level of local journal utilization, the proliferation of such journals, and the challenges faced by academic staff in accessing them. The study employs questionnaires, observations, and interviews as research instruments, with 185 questionnaires distributed and 120 retrieved, representing a 64.9% response rate. Data analysis was conducted using simple percentages and Summation Weighted Index (SWI). Findings indicate that local journals are frequently used by 37.8% of respondents, while 42.3% have access to them. A significant 62.2% acknowledge the proliferation of local journals, which may impact the quality of intellectual content. Utilization rates for consultation, publication, self-development, and teaching are 22.9%, 22.3%, 20.2%, and 15.6%, respectively. Recommendations include encouraging peer reviewers, enhancing the review process for prompt publication, and utilizing platforms like seminars, workshops, and conferences for advertisement.
