Beyond the many facets of identity, the perspective of identity cleavage in Central and Eastern Europe often appears real and is proven by historical realities. Identity, whether individual, group, or community, can generate both convergence and divergence. The 'other,' a dichotomy, becomes the expression of the 'one beyond'—beyond what is specific to one's identity. A border, symbolic or ideological, can thus be identified around such identity constructions. Central and Eastern Europe is no exception to this rule and requires perhaps the most identity frontiers among European states. This analysis considers the realities of identity in Central and Eastern Europe, with an emphasis on the Republic of Moldova. Identity dilemmas and controversies in Moldova and the surrounding area are fueled by geopolitical interests of some states that use these identities to extend or maintain influence. Identities occasionally establish divisions in the true sense; borders gain identity or symbolic ideological form.
