Effectiveness of Computer Game Programs in Reducing Attention Deficit Disorder in Children with Special Needs

Ahmed Nabawy Abdou Issa

This study investigates the impact of a computer game-based intervention designed to alleviate symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) in children with various special needs. The sample comprised 30 primary school children from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, divided equally into three categories: those with learning disabilities, deafness, and mild mental retardation. Participants were assessed using the DSM-IV-TR® criteria for ADD and further evaluated by the electronic attention disorder scale, known as the Alert Test. The intervention was implemented over a specified period, during which the experimental group engaged in structured computer game activities tailored to enhance attention and cognitive functioning. Post-intervention analysis revealed significant improvements in attention among children across all categories, as evidenced by their post-test scores. These findings suggest that computer game programs could serve as effective tools in managing ADD symptoms in children with special needs, highlighting their potential for broader application in educational settings.
