Searching for Business Ideas for Financial Services

Sameer Datye, Jaana Leikas, Jussi Jokinen, Pertti Saariluoma

In this era of massively multifunctional hardware, platform economy, and app development, the success factor for technology and service offerings can be found in the capability to truly fulfill the needs and desires of consumers. The only ground point for all technology and service design can thus be the understanding of how the quality of life could be improved. This paper discusses a human-driven design approach based on this very idea. We introduce the concept of Life-based Design with the help of a practical example of one particular form of life: the phase of moving from work life to retirement. We empirically investigate this form of life and demonstrate how life-based design thinking can be applied to define business ideas and goals for technology and service development. Furthermore, we illustrate how this thinking can pave the way to the creation of innovative business models.
