The restructuring of financial institutions in Colombia is a critical process aimed at transforming, specializing, expanding services, consolidating, and rescuing entities in financial distress. This study examines the impact of Basel III derivatives and the regulatory framework established by Decree 663 of 1993 on restructuring efforts. The Financial Superintendence of Colombia plays a pivotal role, providing oversight and authorization essential for successful transformation. The research, conducted by the Universidad Autonoma Latinoamericana, highlights historical inadequacies and improvisations in restructuring practices, while emphasizing the improvements seen in recent years. The paper explores various restructuring mechanisms, such as acquisitions, mergers, conversions, and transfers of assets, liabilities, and contracts, and analyzes their significance in the context of a globalized financial industry. The findings indicate that Colombian financial institutions are actively seeking innovative strategies to adapt to competitive pressures and growing customer bases, driven by regulatory changes and international standards.
