Performance Analysis of Reed-Solomon Codes Concatenated with Convolutional Codes over AWGN Channel

Kattaswamy Mergu

With the rapid advancement in digital communication technology, there is a pressing need to ensure reliable and error-free data transmission across various applications. Channel coding plays a critical role in enhancing communication system performance by introducing redundancy to correct errors. This paper investigates the effectiveness of serial concatenation of Reed-Solomon codes with Convolutional codes to improve the bit error rate over an Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel. Through MATLAB/OCTAVE simulations, the study evaluates the performance of this concatenated coding scheme against single coding techniques under varying signal-to-noise ratios. The results demonstrate that the concatenation significantly reduces the bit error rate, thus enhancing the reliability of data transmission. This research provides valuable insights into optimizing channel coding strategies for robust communication systems.
