The aim of the present research is to apply the optimization approach in mechanical design areas. In this paper, a recently developed algorithm called Jaya Algorithm (JA) is used for design optimization of cooling towers and pressure vessels. Jaya Algorithm (JA), developed by Rao in 2015, always strives to reach the best solution while avoiding the worst. The optimization design for different thermal engineering problems such as pressure vessel and cooling tower is performed using the Jaya optimization approach. The algorithm is formulated to minimize the total annual cost of pressure vessels and is also used for design optimization of the total annual cost of natural draft wet cooling towers. An application example is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed algorithms. The effects of variation of algorithm parameters on convergence and fitness value of the objective are analyzed, and the results are reported. The proposed method's ability is verified by these two examples, and results obtained using the proposed algorithm show improvements when compared with other optimization algorithms.
